Cigarette smoking can have devastatingly harmful effects on your body even though you can’t see them or maybe even feel them. When you smoke a cigarette and inhale the smoke into your lungs, it gets into your bloodstream very quickly.

One of the first things that happens is it will affect the nicotine receptors within your brain, the more you smoke the more of them there will be. So if you have a particularly bad smoking habit of say 20 a day or more you’re going to find it very difficult with willpower alone to stop smoking.

One of the next things that happens within your body is your heart beat goes faster, and also it will in the process raise your blood pressure, once the nicotine starts to work on your brain. It will release feel good chemicals such as dopamine. This is one of the primary reasons why people have so much difficulty in stopping smoking, nicotine is almost as addictive as crack and cocaine. This is one of the main reasons why a lot of people struggle to stop smoking.

Hundreds of people all over the world die from cigarette smoking every day, here some are some other things which happen to you while you are smoking a cigarette. You will have decreased blood flow to extremities of your body such as your feet and hands. Your central nervous system is stimulated by the chemicals within the cigarettes for a short period of time, and after a while this will dissipate and stop. Some people experience dizziness which can be quite unpleasant, nausea (vomiting) your eyes may start to water, a possible loss of appetite, your sense of smell and taste may change.

Some other negative effects of smoking are having a shortness of breath when doing any physical activity, because your lungs are lined with tar, first thing in the morning you may have a chronic cough otherwise known as smokers cough, your fingers may be yellow as well as your teeth, poor immune system function people who smoke generally get more coughs and colds than non-smokers.

It may take you longer to recover from a particular illness compared to somebody who doesn’t smoke, possibility of suffering from and impotence (erection problems), your skin may be wrinkly compared to that of somebody of the same age as yourself, smokers tend to have a greyish look to their skin.

All these things together will only contribute further to other diseases later on in time, these are just merely some of the side effects of smoking. If you continue to smoke you may also contract any of the following diseases which, could be life-threatening such as respiratory problems such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, emphysema which results in chronic breathing problems, heart attack or a stroke.

Various types of cancers which include lung cancer, throat, mouth, bladder, pancreas and stomach cancer. Possibility of contracting stomach ulcers, possible varicose veins due to the restricted blood flow to your legs.

Smoking might seem a the enjoyable thing to do but have you ever thought consciously about all of the above things. And what they are doing to your body, is it really worth the risk. When you are having your next cigarette imagine what is going on in your body think what it would look like if you could see inside your own body, and the amount of damage it is doing to yourself.

When do the benefits of stopping smoking start you may ask? well the good news is almost straight away so that is something to be very thankful for as far as your health is concerned regards stopping smoking.

Once you stop smoking your risks of contracting certain diseases begins to come into effect almost straight away, you will stop yourself from getting some of these particular life-threatening diseases heart disease, lung cancer, throat cancer.

There may be other non life-threatening problems that will also come back once you stop smoking, if you have suffered from impotence (getting a erection) cataract problems which are to do with your eyes. Your clothes won’t smell like a stale ashtray any more.

You will feel a lot healthier and probably far less likely to suffer from respiratory problems, such as smokers cough which can become worse in the winter especially if you suffer from bronchitis. If you quit smoking before the age of 35 the actual health risks decreased to that of a person whom has never smoked at all.

So here is what happens when you abstain from smoking

Within 72 hours your breathing will become much better, your energy levels will probably come back the tubes in your lungs will start to clear.

Within one month your skin will look better more clearer and healthily and less grey and wrinkled looking, people who smoke for a long period of time can tend to look older than people who don’t smoke. It takes the moisture from your skin and making it look more like a prune. After about three to nine months you will notice that you no longer cough or wheeze like you used to also your lung function will start to increase roughly by about 10 percent.

Once you go past the one-year mark than your risk of having any cardiovascular problems such as a heart attack, or a stroke, comes down to about half that of someone who still smokes.

After 10 years you are far less likely to contract lung cancer and this risk becomes half that of somebody who still smokes, and finally after 15 years you’re far less likely to have a heart attack as regards to somebody who has never smoked.

There are a few other reasons to stop smoking these are food will taste better generally, your house won’t smell of cigarettes. You will have more money in your pocket which you properly never even thought about whilst you were smoking.

A rough estimate of this is if you smoke 20 cigarettes per day for seven days a week the whole year round. You will save yourself 1000 pounds or 2000 dollars that in itself would pay for a nice holiday or some other luxury, instead of just going up in smoke.

And if you are in a relationship your partner will no longer have to do feel like they are kissing a ashtray.
